One processed yogurt a day keeps the blood sugar saying "yay"!

I tell my patients all the time to read labels and really know what you are putting into your body. Everyone thinks they are being "healthy" when they eat sugar-laden yogurt daily because it has healthy bacteria in it. Remember that you are eating "marketing" food and that when the label is saying "healthy probiotics" or "additional omega 3's" added or "gluten-free" or "organic", they are trying to reach the naive consumer who only knows what is trendy today. Become a smart consumer and be mindful that this is what the marketing companies are trying to do to you....fool you into thinking you are eating smarter and "healthier" when you are choosing those foods. To determine how many teaspoons of sugar you are eating in 1 small yogurt, just divide the grams of sugar by 4. For example, in one brand of yogurt (not naming any names), a 125 g container has 17 g of sugar, that is 4.25 tsp of sugar! That's a lot of sugar seeing that a 750 g of original yogurt contains 5 g of sugar (which is like 1.25 tsp of sugar per 125 g). There is still sugar, but you are consuming the better version of the two when you compare. Therefore, read all labels and always pick the version that makes sense to you (low in sugar, no processed chemicals such as aspartame, and a simple list of items on the ingredients list). When you begin to start reading your labels, you will start to ask yourself "why the heck are they adding 'x' to this product?" For example, when you are buying frozen vegetables, make sure that the ingredient is just frozen vegetables. You will be bewildered to see that wheat is added to some of your frozen vegetables, and even sugar! Your eyes will open and you will realize that all this time, you had no idea what additional things were going into your body when you were buying those items.

Angelina Jolie - Breast decision or best decision?

Oh boy! All this controversy over Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy. Everyone has an opinion, and yup of course, I will be giving you mine. Well, for one, I do believe in the freedom of choice and the freedom to make your own decision when it comes to your health. I do believe that everyone is entitled to making their own decisions. I don't judge Angelina Jolie on her decision. After all, she is doing what she knows is best, from what she is told. But I do wonder if she made a quick decision without getting all the facts, doing all her research and getting second opinions. Did she find out about prevention in the cancer world? Did she go and talk to integrative medicine doctors, alternative medicine doctors?
Of course, there are 2 sides to the coin. For those who have lost women to breast cancer, they are probably supporting this decision. And I would too, seeing that we lost someone very dear in our community to breast cancer.  Someone too young to have gone too soon. I get that people want as low risk as possible to get breast cancer. It is a sad illness that probably everyone has been affected by. And I do feel awful for those who have lost someone close to breast cancer that want to hold onto some kind of "truth". My heart goes out to everyone who has lost someone to cancer, not just breast.  However, being a naturopathic doctor and knowing what I know, I do believe that making a rash decision based on emotions and not facts is not the way to do what is best. Angelina Jolie is healthy, has the best resources and has the financial means to live a healthy, long life, with or without the breast cancer gene. By the way, we all have cancer in our body. The cancer cells are dormant unless we get a trigger from our environment (nutrition, emotions, environmental toxins). 
The following link is a really good link to show you that there are other things at play when it comes to breast cancer and certain things you can do. From what I learned in my last course, our genes don't determine our destiny, what we do everyday, how we feel, how we eat, how we play, how we laugh, how we interact with our loved ones, how we work, and how we deal with stress determine our destiny. Of course every body is different and you have to do what is best for you. Listen to your gut, because if you're in line with your gut, doesn't matter what decision you have made. You have just done what is best and aligned with your "truth", which will keep your grounded and at peace, which is the essence of prevention.

Today is INTERNATIONAL THALASSEMIA DAY! Although I am not doing a fundraiser this year, I am still donating to support International Thalassemia Day, which is today! Please go to my page "Dr. Aliya's story" to find out what Thalassemia is and my journey with it.
Hopefully, in the near future, when I have my own clinic with Dr Aleem Jiwa, we can help spread more awareness, donate more money and create thalassemia ripples all across the world. This is my wish and hopefully it comes true. Until then, I can support my dearest cause to my heart by sharing this with others and helping spread the word about Thalassemia.
